Reading Notes: Narayan's Ramayana, Section C

VALI:
Rama following Sita's travel was let to Kiskinda. Hanuman of the monkey clan was intrigued by Rama and Lakshmana. Hanuman allowed them to meet with Sugreeva, son of the sun god and cheif the the monkey clan.

SUGREEVA’S STORY:
Vali, brother of Sugreeva, churned nectar from the ocean for the gods. Vali was blessed with  immense power for his work. Mayavi, a demon, challenged Vali and immediately regretted it. Vali followed him into a cave. His brother thought he was dead and had the cave sealed. Vali believed his brother had tried to seal him inside. He did not let his brother explain himself, Vali chased him off and took his wife. Rama wants to help Sugreeva and shows him his skill with a bow.

DUNDUBI’S STORY:
Dundubi was a demon shaped buffalo. He loved to fight and challenged Vali to a fight and after a year of battle he lost. Sugreeva tells Rama that Sita flew over them and threw her jewelry down. Rama is disappointed at himself for failing to protect Sita. Sugreeva then chanlleges his brother with Rama waiting to attack. Vali does not think Rama would invole himself in a quarrel between brothers. They fight and Rama shoots Vali with an arrow. Rama felt it was his duty to kill Vali due to his friendship with Sugreeva. Vali accepts his death and gives his brother the throne.

WHEN THE RAINS CEASE:
Sugreeva was sad that Rama would not join him in his city. He also told Rama that at the end of the rainy season an army would be prepared. Rama felt hopeless in his current ability to save his wife. After the rainy season ended Lakshmana went to Sugreeva to remind him of the promised army. Sugreeva had become gluttonous with the return of his throne. Sugreeva and Lakshmana talk and Sugreeva agrees to improve himself. He goes to see Rama and is welcomed with open arms.

Rama is happy to see the massive army that Sugreeva as amassed. Hanuman and Angada, two of the generals, went southward. Hanuman was given instructions on how to search for Sita. Rama told the generals Sita can be recognized by her toe-nails glowing red lie rubies. They freed a fallen goddess on their journey. Continuing their journey, they come across Sampathi at the edge of the ocean. He tells the generals that Ravana is Lanka, along with Sita. Hanuman then decides to turn into the size of a mountain to get to Lanka.
